According to Strand + Hvass, alias Christina Strand and Niels Hvass, two graduates of the Danish School of Design, furniture must give pleasure – and continue to do so for many years to come.
Together, and on their own, they have won innumerable Danish and international design awards.
“It’s important that furniture passes something on. There must be a story,” says Hvass.
Strand and Hvass emphasise that they make furniture for people.
“For me the highest praise is when a customer sits on a chair I have designed and says: “You thought of my comfort”, says Strand.
For this reason, the two designers always create prototypes - often in a ratio of 1:1 – before presenting their designs to the manufacturer. Their shared home is full of such prototypes.
“It’s our laboratory. When one of our tables comes onto the market we can guarantee that it can stand up to harsh treatment from children as well as tough wine stains,” say the couple, who work in all kinds of materials.
“The concept decides the material. If the focus is durability then we might choose to work in wood. If dynamism is the focus then steam-bent wood is the obvious choice,” says Hvass.
