Hans J. Wegner

This chair was designed in 1950 and in 2002, PP Mobler received the Danish Reader's Digest Classics Award for re-initiating the production of this easy chair. The chair is not merely a unique object in itself, but also remarkable compared to Hans J. Wegner's other designs, which are based predominantly on wood. With The Flag Halyard Chair, Wegner sends his regards to the early modernists such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer, and shows that he also masters designs in chrome steel pipes. Despite this gesture, the chair is still decidedly Wegner. The chair's expanses are made of plaited flag halyard and the long haired sheepskin softens the industrial sharpness of the steel adding an air of comfort and coziness Nevertheless, the story behind the design is more than just an art historical dialogue. The shape of the chair's seat was conceived during a family holiday in Arhus where the family spent many days by the beach. And Wegner used a lot of the time there experimenting with the shape of the Flag Halyard Chair's seat in the sand. The anecdote shows that Wegner was always at work, but it also shows that work was almost a sort of game for him and that playing around with ideas was central to his working-process.
